Inspection Services for the Derby-Milford Road Bridge Replacement, Orange, CT

Cardinal Engineering provided complete engineering services for this project, which included design, contract administration, and resident engineering services.

Derby-Milford Road is a heavily traveled arterial roadway which provides an important connection between State Routes 121 and 34. The existing bridge, constructed in 1949, consisted of two simple steel and concrete spans in poor condition and supported by concrete abutments and center pier on shallow foundations rated scour critical.

The replacement structure consists of an 82-foot span with a superstructure of precast box beams with full height abutments supported on mini-piles drilled into bedrock. Design of the relocation of a 12” water main was also required. Coordination with CTDOT was required due to the close proximity of the bridge to the intersection of Grassy Hill Road (State Rte. 121).

Cardinal Engineering also prepared the initial State Local Bridge Program funding application for this project.
