Pump Station Inspection, Middletown, CT
Cardinal Engineering Associates, in association with Prime AE Group, provided construction engineering services for the construction of a new wastewater pump station as Phase 2 of the Mattabassett Regionalization Plan to eliminate the City’s aging Wastewater Treatment Plant. This was achieved by collecting and pumping the entire City’s wastewater flow to the newly upgraded Mattabassett District Treatment Plant in Cromwell.
Cardinal provided technical support and resident engineering services for the construction of the force main and all gravity sewer work, as well as constructability review of the civil engineering aspects of the project.
The project consisted of construction of a 25 MGD pump station, which included six (6) variable speed submersible pumps, emergency generator, mechanical screen, vortex grit removal chambers, hydrodynamic surge control tank, odor control, and chlorination systems as well as maintenance room, offices, workshop and control room. The pump station building foundation is supported by over 12” diameter mini-piles drilled into bedrock.
The project also included the installation of 1,000 lf. of 30” DIP force main below Sumner Brook, relocation of 3,500 lf. of sanitary sewer and construction of 1,000 lf of 36” DIP trunk sewer to divert flow from the existing plant to the new pump station. The trunk sewer was installed within a 54” carrier pipe which was jacked under Route 9 and the P&W Railroad. A portion of the trunk sewer was installed above grade on a pile supported utility bridge. The project also included demolition of an existing abandoned treatment plant and disposal of over 1000 cy of contaminated soils.
